Assessment
I believe that there is a huge benefit to using technology for assessment. First and foremost, it creates a much more efficient process for both students and teachers. For teachers, grading can happen automatically. A little bit of work up front can save you a lot of time later on. Another benefit for teachers is that they can use online assessment as a way to eliminate the use of paper in the classroom and the need to take work home. A benefit for students is that they typically get their grades back faster. I find that students are becoming less and less patient when it comes to getting grades and feedback. Using technology can make the process instantaneous or much faster.
For this unit I set up a formative assessment and rubric in Schoology to determine where learners were at in a unit of a course that I am teaching. I wanted to make sure that students understand the pedagogy behind using technology for student creativity in the classroom before they started learning about tech tools for creativity. It helped me determine how much more content I needed to provide on pedagogy before we could move on to the fun stuff.
