Unit 3: Flipped Learning
My initial understanding of Flipped learning was that it is a strategy in which students learn content at home using technology and spend class time digging deeper into content, having rich classroom discussions, or receiving additional help from teachers. What I learned from our content in in this unit is that flipped learning can be difficult to execute successfully for teachers. This makes sense to me because teachers are adding the typical materials they use for class to outside class activities. This forces them to think outside of the box to come up with creative and engaging applications of the learning. Learner generated application is an engaging strategy for creating inquiry and curiosity rich opportunities for learners. Another important idea I learned about is the importance for students to interact with the content provided in the flipped classroom, not just consume it. Interaction should spark curiosity and inquiry.
Flipped learning has the potential to have a substantial positive impact in my classroom and on me as a teacher. In the past I have tried using a flipped environment with students and it hasn’t been that successful. At first, they are excited to learn content in a new way but after a few lessons they get bored with it. I really appreciated our hangout on air with Ramsey Mussalam because it made me realize what I was missing, engagement and curiosity. I have reflected on what he said about creating the presence of an information gap and finding the sweet spot of knowledge with students. In my upcoming work I will be exploring ways to increase anticipation and surprise with students to hold their engagement.
